Grey Heron Journal

Autumn on the mudflats

The tide was out further than usual this morning, and the flats were busy. Three grey herons worked the channel edge, spaced well apart, each pretending the others weren't there.

A small group of little egrets came in low just after sunrise. They are much more restless than the herons, always moving, always stabbing at the water.

The light was flat and grey, which suited the birds. No photographs worth keeping, but a good walk.
