Grey Heron Journal

The art of standing still

I timed a heron today: eleven minutes without moving anything but its eyes, then one quick strike and a small fish. Then another nine minutes of nothing.

Watching them is a lesson in patience. Most of the skill seems to be choosing the right spot and then simply waiting.
